ICR-AADFI Financing Africa’s Logistics Infrastructure: The Role of DFIs Training
- June 11 - 13, 2025
- English & French
- Virtual

Background
Africa’s economic transformation and regional integration agenda rely heavily on the development of efficient, resilient, and interconnected logistics infrastructure. From multimodal transport corridors to inland dry ports and warehousing systems, logistics infrastructure is essential to facilitating trade, reducing the cost of doing business, and enhancing supply chain efficiency across the continent.
Despite its strategic importance, Africa’s logistics infrastructure remains underdeveloped and fragmented, with financing gaps estimated to be in the tens of billions of dollars annually.
Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) have a critical role to play in bridging these gaps — through catalytic financing, de-risking mechanisms, project preparation, and capacity support.
This training program is designed to equip DFI professionals with the technical knowledge, practical tools, and strategic insight required to finance and support logistics infrastructure development in Africa. Through a mix of theory, case-based learning, and interactive group work, participants will explore the unique role of DFIs in unlocking sustainable logistics infrastructure investments aligned with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Agenda 2063, and the SDGs.
Program Objectives
By the end of the course, Active Participants would be able to:
- Describe the logistics infrastructure landscape in Africa, including key bottlenecks and regional trade dynamics.
- Identify financing challenges and opportunities for logistics infrastructure, particularly within the context of AfCFTA, PIDA, and national development plans.
- Analyze and apply financing instruments (e.g., blended finance, guarantees, and PPPs) used by Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) to structure viable logistics infrastructure projects.
- Assess project bankability and ESG alignment using practical tools and evaluation frameworks.
- Develop and pitch a logistics infrastructure concept that simulates real-world stakeholder engagement and financing structuring.
- Build multi-stakeholder partnerships, aligning DFI mandates with public policy priorities and private sector participation.
