The impact of climate change is a significant development challenge that requires the collective actions of stakeholders and professionals from diverse sectors to achieve a shift in combating the effects of climate. Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) and other climate-friendly organizations are embedding sustainability into their business model to help address the climate challenges.

The joint international CEO Forum of AADFI-ADFIAP held on November 8 – 10, 2023, acknowledged that Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) are critical in achieving the climate change agenda; however, it noted that a capacity gap exists in most institutions, which hinders progress. Therefore, it recommended that skilled human capital is a critical enabler and transformative tool for DFIs and other institutions to execute climate-friendly projects/investments.

As most development financing institutions transition to a sustainable model that aligns with global expectations, attracting and retaining talents would be driven by competencies supporting climate change requirements, including building a green project pipeline,  ESG disclosures, and reporting, monitoring, and evaluation.

Therefore, HR has a strategic role in preparing institutions to comply with climate change requirements and integrating sustainability into human resources across the institution’s processes.

The Forum gathers HR practitioners in DFIs and other finance institutions to discuss and share perspectives on building professional skills to support the climate change agenda.
