Dr. Kheswar Jankee

Ambassador of Mauritius to the Russian Federation

Dr. Kheswar Jankee is presently Ambassador of Mauritius to the Russian Federation and immediate former Ambassador of Mauritius to Germany. His contributions to tertiary education and economic policy making have earned him the prestigious award of Grand Officer of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean by the Republic of Mauritius. He has also previously held the position of Chairman of the Development Bank of Mauritius back in 2005, an institution dedicated to furthering economic development and the progress of SMEs. In 2014, the Mauritian Government appointed him as the Ambassador of Mauritius to Germany. He was thereafter posted to the Russian Federation where he still remains assigned. During his tenure as Ambassador over the last decade, he also assumed the position of President of World Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (‘WASME’), India and has been a Founder/President of All Africa Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (‘AAASME’), Nigeria.

On completion of a Master in Economics at the Delhi School of Economics in 1986, he started his career in the education sector and in 1988, he contributed to the foray of economic policymaking as Economist at the Ministry of Economic Planning and thereafter, at the Bank of Mauritius. Through his practical experience at the central bank, particularly in monetary economics and banking, he was solicited at the University of Mauritius as a part time lecturer. He then attended courses in financial policy and programming at the IMF and further developed his interests in research, economic modelling, and lecturing. After 4 years, he shifted to the Economics department at the University of Mauritius as a full time Lecturer in banking and finance and registered for a Ph.D. degree at the University of Mauritius in banking and finance. His experience and interest in macroeconomic policy and modelling granted him widespread recognition through the local press. He was and still is regularly solicited for his views on current economic and social policies, especially on societal issues and economic policies, by the wider media and intervenes as a speaker on economic issues for quarterly reviews.

He was awarded several scholarships to work on his thesis and was attached to several universities including the National University of Singapore, the Monash University, the University of St Andrews and the University of Maryland, College Park under a USA Fulbright scholarship. He was promoted to Associate Professor and became a Visiting Professor at the Institute of Development Studies, Jaipur. Dr Jankee’s participation and publications, in several journals and chapters books, earned him the status of a recognised expert on financial and monetary policies. He also started some research on political economy and economic development. He has been associated with several international organizations including AUC, AERC, World Bank and SADC as a consultant. As an experienced academician and diplomate, Ambassador Jankee continues to be involved in research to address the contemporary economic arising out of bilateral and international cooperation.
