Workshop on Financing Africa’s Transition – A Strategic Handbook for Africa’s Development Finance Institutions (DFIs)

Overview

The Association of African Development Finance Institutions (AADFI), in partnership with the Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST), Stellenbosch University, announces the workshop on Financing Africa’s Transition – A Strategic Handbook for Africa’s Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), which will take place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire on September 11, 2025.

This one-day workshop brings together African DFIs to explore the strategic role they play in financing just, climate-resilient, and inclusive development. Anchored on the newly developed Strategic Handbook for Africa’s DFIs, the workshop provides a space for peer exchange, practical application, and institutional reflection. Participants will engage with real-world case studies, share lessons, and co-develop pathways for strengthening institutional capacity and enabling ecosystems for transition finance.

Program Objectives
  • To introduce the Strategic Handbook for Africa’s DFIs and highlight its relevance in supporting institutional alignment with just transition and climate finance goals.
  • To critically engage with key capacity dimensions outlined in the handbook-governance, ESG, climate risk, and financial management.
  • To apply the handbook’s tools and recommendations to real-world DFI challenges through case-based group work.
  • To foster dialogue on enabling ecosystems, such as policy coherence, project preparation, and local currency mobilisation, that are essential for DFI effectiveness.
  • To develop action plans for institutional uptake of the handbook and identify opportunities for cross-institutional collaboration.

2026 AADFI Annual General Assembly

The Association of African Development Finance Institutions (AADFI) is pleased to announce that its 2026 Annual General Assembly will take place from May 24 to 29, 2026, in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, on the sidelines of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Annual Meetings.

The Annual General Assembly will be held on the theme “Augmenting Sovereign Finance in Africa: DFIs Unlocking Growth and Resilience through NAFA,” with a focus on the transformative role of African Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) in strengthening Africa’s financial sovereignty. The discussions will align with the AfDB-led New African Financial Architecture (NAFA), a system-level framework designed to mobilize long-term investment, reduce Africa’s cost of capital, and reinforce resilience through coordinated financial systems and deeper domestic capital markets.

The Annual General Assembly will convene leaders of African DFIs, government officials, regional institutions, and development partners to further explore how African DFIs can catalyze local investment, de-risk strategic projects, and strengthen economic autonomy to build resilience against global shocks and bridge the continent’s infrastructure funding gap.

Further details will be shared in the coming weeks.
