AfDB Meetings Ignite Africa Smart Cities

The week of 27 to 31 May 2024, marked a significant milestone in Africa’s journey towards sustainable urban development. Embodied by the energy of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Annual Meetings in Nairobi, a pivotal discussion unfolded, focusing on the promising concept of smart cities across the continent.

Throughout the meeting, profound conversations took place delving into the financial prospects and obstacles linked to the rise of smart cities in Africa. From innovative financing models to public-private partnerships, the conversations navigated through key essential areas for Africa’s transition towards a smart city model.

One of the central themes that emerged was the essential role of quality infrastructure investment. Participants underscored the importance of leveraging innovative financing mechanisms and fostering collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors. In particular, the DBSA showcased its comprehensive Municipal Approach, shedding light on how technology can catalyse sustainable urban development, while enhancing service delivery and reducing costs.

Khayelihle Mpungose, Executive Manager of the City Manager’s office of eThekwini City, shared insights into the city’s visionary plans and its partnership with DBSA to address the evolving needs of residents and foster sustainable urban growth.

A significant moment transpired with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between DBSA’s CEO, Boitumelo Mosako and AfDB Vice President for Private Sector, Infrastructure, and Industrialisation, Solomon Adegbie-Quaynor. This landmark agreement aims to mobilise finance for sustainable urban development, marking a tangible step towards realising the smart city vision across Africa.

These discussions and commitments are ready to reshape African cities into vibrant, sustainable urban centres, enriching the lives of residents and propelling economic prosperity. The meeting not only underscored the importance of strategic urban planning, but also highlighted the transformative potential of collaboration in driving innovation, finance, and sustainability.

2026 AADFI Annual General Assembly

The Association of African Development Finance Institutions (AADFI) is pleased to announce that its 2026 Annual General Assembly will take place from May 24 to 29, 2026, in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, on the sidelines of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Annual Meetings.

The Annual General Assembly will be held on the theme “Augmenting Sovereign Finance in Africa: DFIs Unlocking Growth and Resilience through NAFA,” with a focus on the transformative role of African Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) in strengthening Africa’s financial sovereignty. The discussions will align with the AfDB-led New African Financial Architecture (NAFA), a system-level framework designed to mobilize long-term investment, reduce Africa’s cost of capital, and reinforce resilience through coordinated financial systems and deeper domestic capital markets.

The Annual General Assembly will convene leaders of African DFIs, government officials, regional institutions, and development partners to further explore how African DFIs can catalyze local investment, de-risk strategic projects, and strengthen economic autonomy to build resilience against global shocks and bridge the continent’s infrastructure funding gap.

Further details will be shared in the coming weeks.
