The week of 27 to 31 May 2024, marked a significant milestone in Africa’s journey towards sustainable urban development. Embodied by the energy of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Annual Meetings in Nairobi, a pivotal discussion unfolded, focusing on the promising concept of smart cities across the continent.
Throughout the meeting, profound conversations took place delving into the financial prospects and obstacles linked to the rise of smart cities in Africa. From innovative financing models to public-private partnerships, the conversations navigated through key essential areas for Africa’s transition towards a smart city model.
One of the central themes that emerged was the essential role of quality infrastructure investment. Participants underscored the importance of leveraging innovative financing mechanisms and fostering collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors. In particular, the DBSA showcased its comprehensive Municipal Approach, shedding light on how technology can catalyse sustainable urban development, while enhancing service delivery and reducing costs.
Khayelihle Mpungose, Executive Manager of the City Manager’s office of eThekwini City, shared insights into the city’s visionary plans and its partnership with DBSA to address the evolving needs of residents and foster sustainable urban growth.
A significant moment transpired with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between DBSA’s CEO, Boitumelo Mosako and AfDB Vice President for Private Sector, Infrastructure, and Industrialisation, Solomon Adegbie-Quaynor. This landmark agreement aims to mobilise finance for sustainable urban development, marking a tangible step towards realising the smart city vision across Africa.
