Press Statement on the Occasion of the Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Sustainable Project Financing Conferred upon the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development

Regional integration is often discussed in terms of agreements, policies and institutions. But ultimately, integration becomes meaningful when economies are physically and economically connected—when goods can move, businesses can reach larger markets and investment can create opportunities across national borders.

The financing of the Kano–Maradi Standard Gauge Railway by the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development demonstrates the important role that a regional development finance institution can play in making that possible.

By committing substantial financing to a strategic transport corridor linking northern Nigeria with the Republic of Niger, EBID is helping address one of the fundamental constraints to economic development across the region: the cost and difficulty of moving people, goods and economic activity across borders.

The significance of this investment therefore extends beyond the railway itself. Infrastructure of this nature can reshape economic geography. It can open markets, strengthen trade corridors, improve logistics, enable businesses to operate across larger economic areas and create the conditions for new investment and industries to emerge.

This is particularly important for West Africa. The economic potential of the region cannot be fully realised if its markets remain constrained by the limitations of national boundaries and inadequate connectivity. Regional development banks have a critical role to play in mobilising capital behind investments that individual markets may struggle to undertake alone, but from which entire regions can benefit.

The Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Sustainable Project Financing recognises EBID’s contribution to turning the ambition of regional economic integration into tangible investment.

I congratulate Dr George Agyekum Donkor, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of EBID, the Board, management and the entire EBID team on this recognition. I hope this achievement will encourage the Bank to go even further in using its unique regional mandate and financial capabilities to unlock transformational investments that connect markets, strengthen regional value chains and help build a more competitive and economically integrated West Africa.
