The Land and Agricultural Development Bank of South Africa (Land Bank) is a specialist agricultural development finance institution (DFI) that offers tailor made financial solutions for its valued clients to enable farmers to finance land, equipment, asset acquisition and improvements including short term and production credit facilities. The Bank’s value added services include insurance, business development and support services.

As a DFI committed to inclusive growth, the bank leverage funding from public and private sector partnerships to offer enabling funding solutions geared towards ensuring inclusivity, sustainability and growth in the agricultural sector. Through these partnerships, blended finance solutions are developed to support and allow access to funding for development farmers. These solutions include products amongst others, which aim to assist with the transformation of the agriculture sector in South Africa. In this regard, Land Bank is committed to sustainable finance and development and is a signatory to the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) which fosters the implementation of the Principles of Responsible Banking.

In recognition of its ongoing efforts, Land Bank was recently awarded a prestigious Certificate of Merit at the Karlsruhe Sustainable Finance Awards 2025, held in Karlsruhe, Germany on 25th of September 2025. This international recognition affirms Land Bank’s commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture and inclusive rural development through responsible finance.

Further reinforcing this commitment, Land Bank has also been formally admitted into the European Organisation for Sustainable Development’s (EOSD’s) Sustainability Standards and Certification Initiative (SSCI).  This new chapter marks a significant step toward restoring confidence in the institution and positioning it as a driver of responsible development in South Africa’s agricultural sector. The commitment to Sustainable Finance that significantly improves transparency, efficiency and inclusivity within the Agricultural sector positions the Bank to serve as a catalyst for green innovation and digitalisation.

The above milestones reflect Land Bank’s renewed focus on building a resilient, inclusive, and climate-conscious agricultural finance system in South Africa, which is strategically positioned not only to reduce the sector’s carbon footprint but also to enhance productivity and long-term viability, and further underscore the Bank’s strengthened role within the broader DFI community.
