Access to Climate Finance for African DFIs: Challenges & Opportunities
African institutions have very limited access to climate finance. Less than 2% of AADFI member national DFIs have access to climate finance, yet these institutions are expected to play an enormous role in addressing climate change. What are the challenges and opportunities to scale up access to climate finance for African DFIs? The session will further share DFIs’ experiences on their journey to accessing green funds.

What are the support systems available to African institutions in Mobilising Climate Finance
There are a number of green funding institutions and supports available for climate action in developing countries. However, the lack of knowledge of these institutions, their operational methodology, and the complexity of the process are major challenges.
How can African DFIs be supported to accelerate their involvement in facilitating climate finance and green growth? Are support systems available for capacity building, technical assistance, project preparations, etc.?
This session brings major climate finance players to discuss their partnership modalities and processes. It will share information to guide African DFIs in fast-tracking access to green funds to support national development priorities.

FLASHBACK OGAs

TRAVEL TO NAIROBI

As of 1 January 2024, foreign nationals, regardless of nationality, can enter Kenya without a visa for tourism or business travel for stays up to 90 days. Travelers must, however, obtain a new Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

Requirements and Documentation
  1. Valid passport
  2. Recent passport picture
  3. Contact details (home address, telephone, email)
  4. Travel information and flight itinerary (arrival flight number, date of departure of initial flight in case of connecting flights)
  5. Proof of booking for the hotel you will be staying at (if staying with friends, a letter of invitation is accepted)
  6. Yellow fever vaccination certificate if coming from endemic countries (please check the WHO website for the updated list of countries)
Customs

Visitors, including delegates staying in Kenya for up to 3 months, are entitled to duty exemptions of up to $500 worth of non-consumable and consumable goods for personal use that they will take back at the end of the visit. These include non-alcoholic beverages and tobacco in quantities consistent with their visit intentions. You may click here for details.
The Kenyan government will facilitate the customs process for delegates.

Before travelling, ensure that:

  1. You have your valid international vaccination booklet.
  2. You have medical insurance accepted in Kenya and are fit to travel. Any delegate who contravenes this advice does so at their own risk.
  3. You visit your healthcare provider at least one week before your journey for advice/updates on routine vaccines, travel health, and safety. This is especially relevant if you are on continuous treatment to determine what you will need based on your health condition, your destination, and activities at your destination.
VACCINE-PREVENTABLE DISEASES

Vaccines are recommended for all adults, even if you do not travel frequently. A traveler who is not vaccinated has an increased risk of contracting dangerous and life-threatening diseases.

Kenya highly recommends that travellers be up to date with routine vaccines as described in this website.

  • Strongly recommended routine vaccines:
    1. Yellow fever vaccine: Mandatory for travels to/from parts of Africa and South America. Many countries where participants fly may require evidence of yellow fever vaccination. Once administered, this vaccine is valid for life. Yellow fever infection occurs through bites of mosquitoes of Aedes species.
    2. Vaccines that are useful to have, depending on individual risk:
  • Hepatitis A vaccine: exposure to Hepatitis A can occur through ingesting contaminated food or water. A single dose of the Hepatitis A vaccine provides protection for six months, while two doses will give more extended protection for up to 10 years.
  • Hepatitis B vaccine: exposure occurs through contact with contaminated blood, body fluids, and materials or unprotected sexual contact. A single Hepatitis B vaccine lasts for six months. Appropriate protection, however, necessitates three doses, which will protect for up to 10 years.
  • Covid vaccine: Exposure to Covid disease is mainly airborne. All eligible persons are recommended to have this vaccine.
  • Meningitis vaccine: This contains four strains A+C+Y+W123 and offers three-year protection. Exposure occurs by inhaling bacteria found in the tiny droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes into the air.
  • Typhoid vaccine: exposure may occur through ingesting contaminated food or water. The typhoid vaccine is valid for three years.
  • Tetanus vaccine: this is relevant if one engages in activities that may lead to open cuts or wounds, such as falls or motor (and other) accidents. The vaccine is valid for ten years.
  • Rabies vaccine: exposure can occur through animal bites from some domestic and wild animals. Protection is for only 1 to 2 years.
  • Cholera vaccine: Cholera is spread through contaminated food or water. Follow food and drink safety tips, and ensure hand hygiene to prevent Cholera. Depending on the type of vaccine given, you can get protection for up to 3 years.

NB: If you cannot be vaccinated, carry an explanatory letter from your doctor.

Other items to bring with you for travel:

  • The prescription medicines you take every day. Make sure you have enough to last for the entire duration of your trip. Please keep them in their original prescription bottles and always in your carry-on luggage. Follow security guidelines if the medicines are liquids.
  • Small pack of over-the-counter medicine for minor illnesses, e.g., aches, mild food poisoning, etc.
  • Malaria risk is high in some parts of Kenya. If you plan to visit the coastal towns or Kisumu, kindly ensure that you take Malaria prophylaxis. We strongly advise avoiding mosquito bites. Delegates should see a healthcare provider if they feel unwell. Please note that all payments in Kenyan hospitals are cashless. Only Mobile money or debit/credit cards are accepted as modes of payment.
